Driving is like Dog Training?

Dog Owners always ask, it is possible to send your puppy to some Board and Training Facility,  and they will be returned to my trained dog. The Answers is Yes and No.

Let me give you an analogy. Dog Training is like driving a car. Once you learnt how to drive, your skills depend on daily practice. For example, if you took 2-weeks of holidays and you will return home and start driving, your driving skills, road sense, parking, changing lanes need some time to be back to normal.

It's the same as dog training. If you don't practice the skill sets regularly, your puppy or dog will not be capable of performing the behaviour you are requesting.

So it will be like you will need a driver to ferry you around, as you are not capable of driving. And you still can't manage and handle the car.

In my previous blog post, I had a post from Fred Leow on The World Train Your Dog. Some insight of this article, "Since animals are known to learn by consequences which can make them feel happy or upset, therefore I am extremely concerned about the experiences and associations that they acquire in everyday life."

Knowing how and why your puppy loves us is not enough, we need to learn how to engage them and train them positively to ensure their daily experiences are positive and rewarding.

Results of a new study on Positive Reinforcement via Correction based Technique

It never hurts to have more research in favour of using positive reinforcement methods in dog training rather than force-based training. A new study on companion dogs, led by biologist Ana Catarina Vieira de Castro of the Universidade do Porto in Portugal, showed that dogs trained with positive reinforcement showed less stress, and learned faster (yay!) than the dogs trained with leash jerks and loud aversive voices. No surprise here at all, but always great to have more good data in our pockets. Thanks to Dr Patricia McConnell for sharing.

The key importance of Dog Training is RESPONSE. Reward such as foods, fun, play, toys, engagement are the tools we use to build GOOD RESPONSES. Check out SAMMI training routine, it build around food, fun, play, toy and engagement to get great responses from our learners.

Do not leave training to chances, find a reliable trainers with track records. Why would you subject your puppy to 'untrained' dog trainers.

Reinforcement as a built in routine

Reinforcement should be built into our daily routine. The bare minimum is to match the attention from our dog. If the walk is 30 minutes, why can't we spend the 30 minutes, dog-owner time and build the bond and trust?

In our Podcast, we have an interesting episode by Ms Janice Tan on How to Enrich Your Dog's Daily Life with Janice Tan.  A good episode on how to manage your dog daily life with good enrichment. The rule of thumb, a happy and obedience dog is a satisfied dog.

In our Blog Post, I discuss the Awesomeness in Training, where we focus on Attention, Accuracy and Attitude. We need to work on building focus and willingness to work with the owner. In this way, we work our dog to always willing to engage the owner.

The Art of Disc Dogging

The Art of Disc Dogging

Are you interested in Dog Frisbee? Disc Dogging has been an interesting and exciting dog sport. Check out on our introduction program to work with Sammi my 3-months old BC. If you want a good Frisbee Dog, you need to start early and build the drive for this great sport.

Disc Dogging of Dog Frisbee is a easier field as in all you need a flying disc or frisbee and a dog that is willing to play fetch. The essential skill sets are reliable retrieve, willing to fly and catch a frisbee and you can put together great choreography and freestyle displays and you form a GREAT DISC DOGGING TEAM.

In the field of Competitive Disc Dogging, the challenges are the SINGLE DISC Event, the LONGEST CATCH and the DISC FREESTYLE. The Team with the highest scores will win the event.

SINGLE DISC EVENT

In a Single Disc event, the Team consists of a handler, a frisbee dog and 3 flying discs. Each Team is given a time schedule usually about 2 or 3 minutes and the handler will throw the flying disc and the dog will catch and fetch the flying disc back to the handlers. Points are allocated on the distance the flying disc travel and got caught by the frisbee dog. And there is usually a JACKPOT AREA, where the successful catch on the area will have their points doubled.

The Team with the most catches and successfully retrieved will win the event.

LONGEST CATCH

In the Longest Catch event, the Team are scored on the distance marks on the field. The longest successful catch in the air, will score the POINT. Each Team will be given a stipulated time usually about 2 or 3 minutes for the Team to make THREE ATTEMPTS on the longest Throw. Each successful throws and catch is scored according to the distance marked out.

The Team with the most POINTS will win the event.

DISC FREESTYLE In all the Competitive Events, the Disc Freestyle can both be the hardest or the easiest event. Flying disc freestyle, also known as freestyle Frisbee in reference to the trademarked brand name, is a sport and performing art characterized by creative, acrobatic, and athletic maneuvers with a flying disc. Freestyle is performed individually or more commonly in groups, both competitively and recreationally. The Disc Freestyle as the name imply, the Team will each perform a Freestyle Routine based on their repertoire of skills.

The Points are scored accordingly to the level of difficulty, the routine flow, the aesthetic and the accuracy of catches.

The Team with the highest scores will win the event.
